City Council is taking its time deciding how to fix the aging High Street retaining wall.
The city is committing $550,000 in this year’s budget to replace or repair the structure, but they still have to determine whether to keep the existing “rubble” style of stonework, install a plain concrete slab, or create a concrete canvas to be decorated by local artists.
On Monday, they’ll decide if they need more information before moving ahead; councillors are scheduled to vote on whether to ask city administration for another report on the status of the wall and their options for replacing it.

When the topic last came up around the council table, City Manager Norm Gale told councillors that while administration would be happy to provide a report, it wouldn’t contain any new options for council to decide between.
Meanwhile, the city’s Engineering department emphasises that time is running out for the retaining wall. Engineering Director Kayla Dixon says they’ve determined that the wall is failing and that it needs to be replaced this year. (Staff Photo)
