Children In NWO Face Mental Health Challenges: Report

Children living in Northwestern Ontario are facing mental health challenges at a far greater rate than youth living in the rest of the province.

That’s according to a new report released by the Northwestern Health Unit and FIREFLY.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon says social issues play a key role.

The report found there are higher rates of suicide, self-harm, mental and behavioural conditions and substance misuse for children and youth in our area.

The report calls for a need to address a number of social issues including inadequate housing, poverty, social exclusion and unemployment.
