Computer Coding In Schools Getting Attention

There’s a debate in the country over whether Canada is behind the rest of the world when it comes to teaching children computer coding.

In Thunder Bay, both school board’s don’t have it as a separate subject with Gino Russo of the Lakehead District School Board telling us it comes in other forms.

Next week, for instance, Russo points to the fact the public board is starting a robotics program for grades one and two.

He believesthat computer science is something Canada is progressing on and isn’t sure we are behind the curve, noting “when you look at our scores we’re actually ahead of other countries.”

Jerry Izydorczak notes the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board incorporates it into other subjects like math.

But neither tech teacher wanted to discuss whether coding should be a mandatory subject, preferring to leave that up to the government. (Stock photo)
