Combating Racism In Thunder Bay

A lot of work and analytics showing what kind of a problem racism is in Thunder Bay.

Four speakers will present the Year 2 Report of the Incident Reporting & Referral Service Working Group.

“We’re excited to bring (the report) to council to continue showcasing that obviously we still have many issues within our community related to racism,” remarks Jason Veltri, who’s the Chair of Anti-Racism and Respect Advisory Committee. “This is a snapshot of those that have reported a racist incident within our community. Who it’s affecting, how it’s being affected, the age groups that it’s affecting. The stats will show that racism still exists, that’s not shocking to anyone.”

The other three speakers are:

Dr. Amy Siciliano, PhD – Report author
Marie Klassen, Lakehead Social Planning Council
Brenda Reimer – Chair, Incident Reporting & Referral Service Working Group

“Dr. Siciliano is the author of the report, she’s contracted by Lakehead Social Planning Council to help facilitate the review of the data to formulate a report based on the themes within the reporting of racist incidents,” Veltri explains when asked how the report is generated. “(Siciliano) was also the Crime Prevention Coordinator with the city at one point so she’s very well-versed and understanding the challenges that our community is facing and highlights that through a variety of recommendations that we can continue moving forward and how we move forward with addressing racism within our community.”

Some key numbers from the report will be available tomorrow on our websites.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
