City Speaks Up For Legal Aid

City Council is adding its voice to a call for more legal aid funding from the province.

Current River Councillor Andrew Foulds says it’s important to secure funding for services like Kinna-aweya Legal Clinic.

He notes they help some of the most marginalized people in the city including Indigenous people, injured workers, and people with disabilities.

Foulds also points out City Hall will be affected if the funding isn’t re-instated.

“The impact of these cuts, we’re going to feel as a municipality, there’s no question. Because people who are struggling with keeping their homes run the risk of becoming homeless, which means they’re going to be impacting shelters.”

The Councillor adds legal clinics do vital work to address poverty in the city.

McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton was also among the supporters of the motion, and feels Kinna-aweya has its clients’ best interests at heart.
