City Approves Cannabis Store Policy

City staff have their marching orders for giving feedback on a proposed cannabis store location.

City Council approved a plan for how they can respond once the site is announced.

McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton opposed it, suggesting the guidelines for what the city calls “sensitive areas” are too restrictive.

“I would like to almost, for me personally, let businesses decide where they set up shop. It’s kind of frustrating that the downtowns will be exempt from [where stores would be acceptable, according to] this new map.”

The final decision on the location of the cannabis store will be made by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission.

Thunder Bay has been allocated one license, but the AGCO has not announced which business will be allowed to set up a physical cannabis store.

The city will have 15 days to give the AGCO its feedback once the announcement is made.
