Canada’s 2026 Census is officially underway, with households across the country now receiving their secure access codes and instructions to complete the mandatory questionnaire.
As you know – the Census happens every 5 years. It’s an important project. This gives us essential demographic, social, and economic information from every household, forming the backbone of how governments plan services like health care, education, transportation, and employment programs.

Did you know that you are legally required to fill out the form?
Canadians are legally required to participate under the Statistics Act. AND, look out – if you don’t complete the form (one per household), you could face fines of up to $500.
It’s an easier format this year.
It’s more accessible than ever. You can do it online, and it’s available in 28 languages and alternate formats, plus follow‑up support from Statistics Canada employees for anyone who needs help.
The long format version has expanded questions.
New additions include questions on general health, sexual orientation for Canadians aged 15 and older, and experiences with homelessness over the past 12 months—data gaps that surveys couldn’t fully capture before.
Deadline:
You have until May 12th, but if you don’t fill it out by then, you’ll get a reminder going as far as up to July. (so, you have time, don’t rush it).
The short form version took me exactly 5 minutes. I’ve heard there is a long-form version with over 60 questions (that’ll definitely take a bit longer)
