Cattle Farmers Facing ‘A Bit Of A Disaster’

Cattle farmers in the region are facing a problem.Thunder Bay-Rainy River Liberal MP Marcus Powlowski explains the closure of a major abattoir and packing plant in Toronto has backed up the whole system.

Powlowski tells us about 16,000 head of cattle are waiting to be slaughtered but they are dying of heart attacks at feed lots in southern Ontario because they cannot be moved into the market.

Powlowski says that is causing a drop in prices from about $1,000 a head to $300 for farmers in this region causing them “economic hardship.” He calls it “a bit of a disaster.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
