Indoor Turf Non-Business Meeting: What Happens

The multi-use indoor turf facility meeting on April 29th is a non-business gathering.

Designating the session as a non-business gathering allows city administration to present its options for the facility to council, though council members will not be able to debate, decide or vote on any options going forward.

You will be able to view the meeting for the Multi-Use Indoor Turf Facility. The meeting will be broadcast on several platforms, including the city’s website.

Council decided in late March not to award the tender to the Tom Jones Corporation by a vote of 7-5.

The rules are laid out through the city’s procedural by-law and has to adhere to the Municipal Act.

In an email to Acadia Broadcasting, City Clerk Krista Power stated the Municipal Act dictates the rules on how to conduct meetings and how to provide notice to the public.

The corporation then through its by-law creates the rules of procedure for the meeting and decision making.

The procedure by-law states that (a) council may, as provided for the Municipal Act, 2001 establish a meeting for the purposes of information or training of members of council, (b) such meetings may be closed to the public as provided for in this by-law and (c) motions will not be considered.

When the city does close a non-business meeting, they must give adequate reason why the meeting was off-limits to the public, as per the Municipal Act.

City Manager Norm Gale will officially unveil the plans for the meeting which will happen at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 29th with the agenda becoming available on the Monday.

The search for a new facility was spurred on following the collapse of the Sportsdome on the CLE Grounds in a November 2016 snowstorm.

It threw the soccer community into chaos since both men’s and women’s clubs were forced to cancel their seasons because there was no place to play.
