Landfill Business Discounts To Be Considered

Could businesses receive a volume discount when dropping garbage off at Thunder Bay’s landfill site?

Northwood Councillor Shelby Ch’ng tells us the idea seems ok at first glance, so Monday night she’ll ask city staff to see if the math supports it as a city business or a service to property owners.

“It’s born on the back of the taxpayer, to give discounts. And, we only have so much room in our landfill site,” says Ch’ng.

The city councillor says a business owner has asked insistently this be done.

She also notes what could happen should the discount be granted, and the chance the dump fill up faster. “How I understand it, not just anyone can open up a landfill site. You have to apply, there’s an environmental assessment, there’s life cycles to landfill sites.”
