Blue-Green Algae Spotted In Surprise Lake

Thunder Bay’s Health Unit is sounding the alarm for those who have property around Surprise Lake.

They say blue-green algae has been recently found in the lake and will alert the public when toxicology test results for the algae come back.

When blue-green algae are present in water, it is important to avoid drinking the water, using it for household purposes.

Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams.

Health Unit officials remind you to avoid water that has the algae present and notes it could take two weeks before it dissipates.

This summer several lakes had blue-green algae reported in them.
