Another $5.7-million investment in mining operations north of Thunder Bay is music to the ears of a local mining expert.
John Mason is looking forward to how many more years of work North American Palladium will get out of the money it’s putting into the Lac Des Isle mine.
“The resource they have now will give Lac Des Isle, North American Palladium, approximately 10 years of resource, and I mean, the goal is to exceed that.”
The mining services project manager says the money is added the $60-million budget that includes the Sunday Lake mining project.
He’s also watching what could happen as palladium prices keep rising.
“I think we’re going to see more companies exploring for palladium, in northern Ontario. I think there’s an opportunity there to discover and develop new ore bodies on the back of that metal.”
And, Mason believes it’ll mean more jobs available in the region, another 200.
“It’s not all about new positions, but it will be replacing retirements, some attrition in there. But also an expansion as they go fully underground over the next 3 years.”
