Airport Shows Support For Indigenous Students

The local airport has joined the Wake the Giant project to make youth from First Nations feel welcome.

The Wake the Giant logo is meant to be a symbol to Indigenous students that the space is safe and welcoming.

Project organizer Sean Spenrath says you’ll see stickers displaying the Wake the Giant logo all over the airport and the businesses inside.

That includes the gate where flights from many northern First Nations arrive.

Spenrath adds they’ve sent the logo to schools in northern First Nations, so students will recognize it when they land.

“When they see it when they first touch down in Thunder Bay, they immediately start to think Thunder Bay is a welcoming place.”

The organizer adds it’s important for businesses like the airport to make sure everyone is on board before they display the sticker, to ensure they understand what Wake the Giant stands for, and do cultural sensitivity training.
