Ms. Yvonne May Magdalene Bates (née L’arrivee)

*May 9, 1953 – January 13, 2026*

Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go.

With deep love and sorrow, we announce the passing of Ms. Yvonne May Magdalene Bates on January 13, 2026, in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She was 72 years old. There will be no formal service at this time.

Yvonne was born on May 9, 1953, in Fort William, Ontario, and remained a lifelong resident of the Thunder Bay area. She married and began her life as a devoted stay-at-home mother to her three children. At the age of 54, she returned to school— Graduating at the top of her class, she was recognized in the *Chronicle Journal* as the first older graduate in years to reach such a milestone.

Following graduation, Yvonne re-entered the workforce and found joy in her job cleaning at the airport. She was cherished by those who worked alongside her and remained dedicated to her role until the age of 71 when she happily retired.

Yvonne’s quiet strength and gentle humor left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She enjoyed a simple life centered around family. One of her favorite past times was bowling at Galaxy Lanes. She also valued her time, enjoying family dinners filled with laughter, horror movies, and competitive games of UNO that always promised fun. When not at home, she could often be found at the bingo hall—her second favorite place—where it wasn’t about winning but about strategy, luck, and enjoyment of the game.

She was a loving mother to Charlotte Bates, Donna Bates, and Donald (Colleen) Bates, and a proud grandmother to Alina Bates and Lochlain Bates. She also leaves behind her siblings: Wayne (Alfca) L’arrivee; Leroy Newman; Pat Reynolds and Lorraine Bates. She also left behind many nieces and nephews.

Yvonne is reunited in peace with her Mother Lucille Newman; Father Fred L’arrivee; Brother Doug Newman; and beloved Granddaughters Hayley Lauren Maunu and Krista Anne Maunu. Also, her in- laws Dennis Reynolds, Emily Newman and Ed Bates.

Those who knew Yvonne will remember her as a woman who never complained, always offered kind words, and accepted people without judgment. Her sense of humor was subtle but sharp—often missed if you weren’t paying close attention—but always appreciated by those lucky enough to catch it. She gained independence later in life that allowed her to blossom socially and personally, embracing new experiences with openness and joy. Her quiet presence brought comfort; her strength brought inspiration; and her love brought warmth to all who surrounded her. She will be deeply missed.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.

The family would also like to thank the dedicated Doctors and Nurses at the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Care Centre for their kindness, patience and support. Memorial donations may be made to the Northern Cancer Fund at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Science Foundation 980 Oliver Rd, Thunder Bay ON P7B 6V4

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
