Betty-Lou Rau (nee Marchant)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Betty-Lou Rau (nee Marchant), on October 25th, 2025 at the age of 88, at TBRHSC surrounded by the love of her family.

Betty-Lou was born in Fort William, Ontario to parents Jack and Clara Marchant. She attended Selkirk High, Ontario Business College and worked at Great Lakes Paper.

In 1965, she married Carl Rau. They built a new home and shortly after welcomed a son, Brent and daughter, Luana. Together they opened Fin Feather Fur Pet Shop and Betty-Lou Ceramics, businesses she continued to run when Carl passed away, up until her retirement at age 60.

Betty-Lou was a kind, generous lady. From an early age she enjoyed travelling and took many trips to warm destinations before and during retirement. She loved baking, was very crafty and enjoyed sharing her beautiful talents with family and friends. She was a proud member of First Church United where she was a part of the choir, UCW and couples club. It was there she met many of her special long-life friends. She also cherished her friendships with many ladies in her ceramic/craft groups and friends at the family camp on Lake Superior.

Betty-Lou’s pride and joy were her grandsons, Brody and Braedon. She loved them dearly…they truly were the centre of her world. Caring for them when they were little brought her so much happiness. She was proud to show them off and bragged about them at any opportunity, up until her last days.

She is lovingly survived by her children Brent and Luana, grandchildren Brody and Braedon (Dayna), and their mom, Dina Facca. She is also survived by her sister Marguerite (Gerry) and sisters-in-law, Jean, Barbara (Jack), Gail and Judy. Also surviving are nephews and nieces Kim, Lori, Jody, John, Kelly, Jamie, Johnathon and Cameron.

She is predeceased by her spouse Carl, parents Jack and Clara Marchant, in-laws Charlie and Lorna Rau, brother Reginald and sisters-in-law, Kathleen and Lorraine.

As Betty-Lou aged she struggled with many illnesses. She felt so blessed to have had her family and tremendous group of friends to help her over the years. She loved her home and was so happy to have her wish granted of remaining there until her passing. A special mention to her friend Lorraine Pitura, and nurses Hillary and Isolena on 2A that took such good care of her.

Betty-Lou, otherwise known as Gramma, was an amazing lady who was adored by family, loved by many, and will be deeply missed.

A funeral service will be held on Monday November 3rd at Broadway United Church at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetes Association would be gratefully appreciated.
