Standoff ends, suspect in custody

Thunder Bay Police announced late Friday night that the hours-long standoff in the city’s northside downtown is over and one person is in custody.

Police arrived at the 100 block of Cumberland Street North just after 8:30 a.m. Friday for a weapons call.

After containing the area, members of the Ontario Provincial Police’s Tactics and Rescue Unit (TRU) team and Emergency Response Team (ERT) assisted as an individual was held hostage in the building.

The hostage was able to exit the building later in the morning, but the standoff with the suspect continued into Friday night.

Police say more details will be made available later, but the public should expect continued police presence in the downtown core.
