Northwestern Ontario’s French Catholic School Board has had to cancel an upcoming project in Thunder Bay.
The Conseil Scolaire de District Catholique des Aurores Boreales’ (CSDCAB) École Secondaire Catholique de La Vérendrye (ESC de La Vérendrye) announced their plans to build a new stage and gym in October 2024.
“It is with deep disappointment that we announce this decision,” said Board Chair, Claudette Gleeson. “We recognize the importance of this project for our students and the entire Francophone community of Thunder Bay.”
The school board and the Ministry of Education had allotted a total of $5,306,509 towards the project.
A call for tenders went out, but the bids received from contractors came in significantly above the budget.
The board tried to find alternative solutions but the gap between the budget and tenders was too large to bridge.
The CSDCB serves nine communities in the region, operating nine elementary schools and two high schools.
