Residents displaced by fire at Spence Court

A fire at Spence Court has displaced some residents from their homes.

Firefighters were sent to the apartment building around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

Callers from the building reported smoke in a fifth-floor hallway while fire rescue was en route.

When crews arrived they found smoke on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors.

They made sure residents on the fire floor and above had sheltered in place.

Before encountering the smoke, Firefighters ensured the floors below the fire were safely evacuated.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control, limiting damage to the apartment unit affected by the fire.

Paramedics attended to one resident in a neighboring apartment.

The residents of the unit that had the fire were not home.

“The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents to acquire accommodation at local hotels until restoration can be performed in the facility,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue in a release.

No information was provided as to how many residents were displaced. It is also unclear if the displaced residents are from one unit or multiple.
