Leaders across Ontario are looking at infrastructure priorities with money trickling down from Queen’s Park.
Minister of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry Greg Rickford unveiled the Northern Ontario Resource Development Support Fund Wednesday, which will provide $15 million annually over the next five years.
“It’s not an application process,” clarifies Shuniah Mayor Wendy Landry, who also serves as the President of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA). “There’s already an allocation to each of the municipalities on how much that they would get out of this money. The municipalities have to submit their projects to the province as to what they want to use it for, simply for accounting and transparency purposes.”
Shuniah has been allocated $130,003 while Thunder Bay is in line to receive $400,000 to help offset the cost of community infrastructure projects.

Municipalities can make their pitch to the province on Tuesday, December 7.
Funding for year one will be distributed to eligible municipalities by March 31, 2022.
