A new e-ticketing program is now in place for OPP across the province.
It was developed in southern Ontario before expanding to northwestern Ontario recently.
Sergeant Jim Mill says real-time reporting helps police with targeted enforcement.
“You can look at the map and be like ‘Oh, we’ve got a lot of dots, so there’s been a lot of activity on [Highway] 11 or 71, but Highway 600 doesn’t look like it’s had much going on here, make sure someone’s assigned to put a little more attention there,'” he notes.
Mills says the system is also capable of issuing a warning ticket that identifies the fine the driver would have received if they were charged.
Mills says another benefit benefit is real-time tracking of charges and warnings.
Any one of us can fire up our computer, log into the program, and see if there’s an officer right now issuing a ticket. As soon as they’re done, I can look on the computer and I can see this officer just wrote a speeding ticket at this location,” he explains.
