Plans For Ice At Current River, Port Arthur Arenas

Thunder Bay is planning the re-installation of ice even in the heat of July.

The city can re-open recreational facilities Friday as part of Step 3 in Ontario’s Roadmap to Reopen.

General Manager of Community Services Kelly Robertson says the goal is to have the ice back in at the Current River arena soon followed by the Port Arthur Arena in mid-September.

Robertson remembers when the facilities were open for a brief time in the Fall of 2020: “We had to ask our clients to change in the parking lot or at least come to the arena and not have access to our dressing rooms. We would expect that they might ask us to continue to do active screenings of clients that are making use of the indoor recreation facilities.”

In Step 3, indoor facilities can open with a maximum of 50 per cent capacity and no more than a thousand spectators.

Outdoor venues can welcome either 75 per cent of the usual seating capacity or 15,000 people, whichever is less.
