Net Zero Strategy Back On The Table

Thunder Bay’s proposed Net Zero Strategy will be back before council Monday night.

Councillors need to sign off on further work as city officials look to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050.

Sustainability Coordinator Summer Stevenson, who’s been behind the scenes constructing the plan, explains what will happen should council endorse the strategy.

“We will begin developing some education programs around what all of these targets mean,” Stevenson said. “We will also get a feasibility study going, which will look at how we can address some of the big moves.”

Stevenson there are six significant moves laid out in the strategy, one of which includes retrofitting a significant number of buildings in the city.

“Our plan is to conduct more work to figure out exactly what it’s going to take to do that, and how we can help homeowners to undertake some of these bigger retrofit projects,” noted Stevenson.

Council got their first look at the Net Zero strategy on May 3 and there’s been ongoing public consultation ever since.
