City Finances Remain Stable

A consistent figure year over year when it comes to the financial picture for Thunder Bay.

During the recent virtual town hall meeting hosted by Mayor Bill Mauro, Head of Finance Linda Evans gave a presentation that the total debt outstanding for the city is $212 million.

This figure was consistent with the balance at the end of 2019.

The question period turned attention to the financial state of local businesses who have had difficulties during the numerous lockdowns since the start of the pandemic.

Mauro responded to a question looking at the current lockdown the province is in.

“Clearly the authorities on closures and openings is not with the city of Thunder Bay. The decisions that have been made that have lead to closures of businesses have been made at the provincial level.”

The mayor goes on to talk about the harsh realities of the situation for local business.

“It’s been very difficult for so many of them, we’re aware of that,” Mauro stated. “We appreciate their may be some loses, some businesses that may close and not re-open, so it’s been a very difficult time.”
