New NWHU Cases Headed Down

The number of new cases being reported by the Northwestern Health Unit appears to be headed in the right direction.

Over the first three weeks of May, the NWHU has reported 115 new COVID-19 cases, which is down 32.35 per-cent from the first three weeks of April (170 cases) and down 29.45 per-cent from the first three weeks of March (163 cases).

Part of the success can be attributed to vaccinations, with the regional health authority reporting that 54 per-cent of all adults in the region having received at least their first dose.

Breaking that number down further the Kenora health hub leads the way with 61 per-cent vaccination, followed by the Fort Frances area with 59 per-cent and the Sioux Lookout area with 55 per-cent.

Under the new Provincial re-opening plan, 60 per-cent of all adults in Ontario need to have received at least one dose to move into phase one.

Another positive for the region is the test positivity rate, which sits at 1.38 per-cent for the week of May 10-16 and 1.06 per-cent since the start of the pandemic.

The weekly test positivity rate was as high as 3.25 per-cent the week of April 19-25, when the Northwestern Health Unit reported almost 70 new COVID-19 cases.

There have been a total of 1,048 confirmed COVID-19 cases within the NWHU catchment area since the start of the pandemic, with 1,022 marked as resolved.
