Fire Crews Battle Large Bush Fire

Update 8pm, Tuesday:

It is a busy night for Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, as well as Thunder Bay police and fire crews.

The MNRF confirms 14 new forest fires throughout the northwest region, from Kenora, to Fort Frances, and a number in the Thunder Bay District.

What’s called “Thunder Bay 8” is not under control, burning about 120 hectares, near Saari Road. City police have been stopping traffic at the Maki Road and Miller Heights Drive junction, only allowing traffic through if they live on Miller Heights Drive, or emergency crews, including Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Water bombers have been seen flying overhead, the smoke visible from Mud Lake Road, and Dawson Road.

Also, the MNRF says Thunder Bay 10 is not under control, at 1.8 hectares, near Dog Lake Road. There are a number of other smaller fires as well.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
