Thunder Bay’s mayor is not budging in his call for provincial regional lockdown approach.
After Premier Doug Ford told our newsroom he was not willing to take the chance, for now, should COVID-19 cases go up here, Bill Mauro wasn’t buying it.
“The idea that people from the GTHA, Greater Toronto, Hamilton area hotspots, are going to travel to Thunder Bay to play golf, or play tennis, I think is a bit of a stretch. And even if that was to occur, that could easily be accommodated,” noted the mayor.
He repeated Ontario is the only jurisdiction in North America not to allow outdoor recreational facilities.
Mauro added three or four weeks ago he’d give the government the benefit of doubt. “When the variants were still newly arrived in the city, they’ve been here for about four weeks now, our numbers are still stable and declining. You can always shut down again if the numbers went up again significantly.”

In an exclusive interview with Acadia Broadcasting news last week, the premier pointed out people would start heading north, and cases would go up.
