Police To Start Recording Interactions

You may soon be on camera if you interact with Thunder Bay police.

The force tells us effective Monday, some officers will be wearing body worn cameras, recording both audio and video.

The cameras will eventually be worn by all front-line primary response officers, assigned to the Traffic Unit, by June.

Police add installation will also happen to all vehicles.

Thunder Bay Police Service points out this is the Digital Evidence Management project, designed to enhance public safety and strengthen accountability. The system is also more than just cameras, it’s meant to create a more efficient and effective flow of evidence.

• Enhance transparency, public trust and confidence
• Enhance officer accountability
• De-escalate volatile situations
• Collection and transfer of evidence for disclosure
• Protect officers from unfounded allegations of misconduct

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
