Respect Committee Honours Coffee Shop, Elder

The city is recognizing a north-end coffee shop and a Fort William First Nation elder for their compassion and work in the community.

Bay Village Coffee received one of this year’s respect. Awards for its commitment to inclusion and giving back.

Co-owner Gary Mack says he feels humbled, adding it’s good to know they are making a difference in the community.

“We believe that everyone is deserving of respect in our community, and for us to be centered out as a business that provides that, is really meaningful to us,” he says.

Terry Bannon received a respect. Award for her work, which includes getting youth involved in Indigenous culture and in sports.

She echoes Mack’s feelings, saying everyone deserves respect.

“I work with families, their children and school, and make sure they get their programming done, whatever they need while they’re trying to get healed or fixed. I’m not saying I’m a saviour or nothing, but I try to help,” she says.
