Business Owner Reflects On Machar Fire

The owner of a Bay Street business that burned down this weekend is glad nobody was there when the fire began.

Star-Lite Flooring owner Andy Kulifaj says he was at home when he heard the news about the blaze at the corner of Machar Avenue.

“One of our friends from Waverley Towers phoned me and said ‘Your shop’s on fire,’ so I thought they were joking,” he says, adding the shop was already up in smoke when he arrived shortly after five o’clock.

Kulifaj notes his business had been at the Maki Block location for 12 years, and his next step is finding a new home for the shop.

“It’ll have to be demolished, there’s nothing there to save,” he points out.

A section of Machar Avenue is still blocked off after Friday night’s fire, which lasted into Saturday morning. The cause is under investigation.
