The Thunder Bay Border Cats will be represented this summer in the upcoming Northwoods League season.
Field Manager Mike Steed says the league will hold a dispersal draft on Monday after the ball team opted out of the 2021 campaign due to the pandemic and border restrictions.
Steed discusses the prospects of a Canadian left handed pitcher before next week’s draft.
“Caden Griffin, who plays with the University of Missouri, was contacted by [the Duluth Huskies],” Steed said. “He has some university teammates on that squad so he may be going there. It also depends on if someone else in the league picks Griffin before Duluth is able to.”
The Manager confirmed only two players on the roster chose not to participate in the season.
Whoever selects the Border Cats players will have to return them for the 2022 season.
“I wanted to make sure the players, first and foremost, were taken care of when we decided to opt out of this season,” noted Steed. “Summer is a big deal in their development, especially playing in the Northwoods League. The organization wanted to make sure they still have that experience and opportunity to play.”
Steed signed a three year contract with the Border Cats before the 2020 season and is optimistic about managing next summer.
“You know every player wanted to come up to Thunder Bay so hopefully we will back playing out of the Port Arthur Stadium next season,” remarked Steed.
