COVID-19 Outbreak At Hospital Unit

An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center’s 1A medicine unit.

The declaration is made whenever there are two or more cases confirmed in a specific area over the previous 14 days, and the virus was contracted within the specified area.

The provincial Ministry of Health has set those guidelines.

The statement from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit doesn’t indicate how many cases have been declared.

As a precaution, this unit is closed to any admissions and essential care givers until further notice, but the hospital is still open.

Furthermore, due to this outbreak and the high number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital, officials say they are moving the hospital’s internal response team from Red (control) to Grey (lockdown).

This means additional options are under review to protect staff and patients, including reducing elective surgeries, and procedures regarding patient transfer.
