Hankkio Welcomes Provincial Financial Help

Thunder Bay Fire Chief Greg Hankkio is looking forward to getting more financial help from the province.

$5 million is being committed for all municipal fire services to help address the impacts of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The funds can also be used to enhance fire safety training and support safety inspection programs to ensure compliance with the Ontario Fire Code.

“Both very important processes with respect to keeping our firefighters and the community safe,” Hankkio says. “We will definitely do an analysis of where the money can be spent and we will put the money to good use for sure.”

The Chief notes the funds are from this fiscal year which wraps up on March 31st. He adds there’s usually a base funding rate of $4,500 for each municipality that can also be tied to a per capita calculation.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
