Regardless of the year that 2020 has been, the need for families remains the same.
The Christmas Cheer Fund kicked off the campaign Friday, which for the first time is a combined effort with Toys for Tots.
The tradition gifts one week’s worth of groceries and toys to families with children living in poverty.
Campaign Chair Joleene Kemp says the month long series of events is all about restoring compassion.
“There are more people living in poverty now than ever before. There are even families where the children are coming to school hungry, so people are really trying to make ends meet,” says Kemp. “We have a lot of faith and we believe in the generosity of people [around the holidays]. I believe that the nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies and toonies are going to make the difference so we can in fact pay for groceries.”
The Campaign Chair is hoping for a surplus.
“Each year we’ve ended up with a small surplus so we’re hoping that the small surplus is our kick start for this year and that the money that comes in will cover all of our expenses,” notes Kemp.
As part of the festivities, Acadia Broadcasting will be hosting the 36 Hours of Cheer marathon on Thursday December 10th and Friday December 11th.
