Changes Coming To Blue Box Program

You will soon be able to add more items to the blue box for recycling in Ontario.

The province is adding more plastic or wood, such as cups or stir sticks, but it’s something Thunder Bay city councillor Brian McKinnon says will not start yet due to consultation.

“Once the consultation ends, and with all the suggestions, there will probably be some changes. But when it’s activated, probably, let’s keep our fingers crossed, sometime in the spring,” says McKinnon.

The Red River Ward councillor adds this is due to pressure from municipalities including Thunder Bay on the province.

He points out the consultation period will last sometime into December, something he says is a good idea, so ideas can be added or subtracted. “I know they’re going to be looking at other jurisdictions, for example, many countries in Europe, have been doing these things for a long time. We’ll look at some of those things, see what works over there.”

The Thunder Bay councillor adds Monday’s provincial announcement includes shifting packaging costs away from municipalities, and onto manufacturers, who seem to persist in using excessive packaging.
