3D Sign Proposed For Thunder Bay

The city’s 50th Anniversary Committee would like to see a 3D Thunder Bay sign located somewhere at the waterfront.

Councillor Shelby Ch’ng says it would be similar to the colourful sign Toronto has.

“The Toronto sign has become the second most photographed place in Toronto next to the CN Tower. So we’re hoping we can have something like that in Thunder Bay…that is a tourist draw,” explains Ch’ng.

The $150,000 cost would come from the city’s share of the hotel accommodation tax and from the Community Economic Development’s portion of that same tax.

Ch’ng stresses the project would not be “on the tax bill, no taxes are gonna be raised, we’re not taking (money) out of potholes, it’s money specifically from people using hotels for tourism-related products.”

The idea comes before city councillors on Monday.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
