Take Off

Bob and Doug McKenzie have become a part of Canadian culture…almost every Canadian has told someone to ‘Take Off, Eh!’ or called someone a ‘hoser’. My kids are all under 13 and know well the ‘intro music’ (see the clip below if you’re confused). Donuts (preferrably Jelly’s), toques, beer…and ridiculous buffoonery abounded with the McKenzie brothers! I loved watching Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as the McKenzie Brothers on SCTV and even now I can still remember my favourite skits, my favourite lines and sometimes ponder putting a mouse in a bottle of beer in order to get a free case (do they actually make beer in bottles any more? That’s a side question for another post…). I had no idea though, how these two goobers ended up together, not to mention how they ended up with an album and massive ties to Rush! This article that I found though, sheds some pretty cool light on it though. A chance meeting with a school chum of Moranis combined with Thomas’s brother becoming a big deal in Canada (Ian Thomas had a couple of hits you can hear regularly on The Bay!) and one hell of a smart marketing/promotions campaign really boosted the popularity of the McKenzie’s. There was a LOT of ‘outside the box’ and innovative thinking that went into getting a couple of idiots firmly entrenched in the Canadian Consciousness!

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
