Two Thunder Bay companies are receiving over $845,566 in provincial funding to develop health care technology.
Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford points out Radialis Medical will use $434,000 to develop a nuclear imaging system which detects breast cancer, using lower amounts of radiation.
“It’s going to be in high demand, at least across this country already, in some of the top health care centres outside of Thunder Bay and the province of Ontario. Health science technology in Thunder Bay is on the move,” says Rickford.
Meanwhile, technology treating diabetic foot ulcers will be developed by Thunder Bay’s RegenMed.
The health science facility’s executive director, David Stezenko, says the $411,566 received will advance progress in preventing more amputations. “Last year alone in Ontario, approximately 2,300 people lost their leg or their leg was amputated just below the knee, because their diabetic foot ulcer would not close utilizing Canada’s current level of care.”
