Safety First For Fireworks Displays

With no city fireworks this year many residents will be having private displays.

Kevin Anderson of Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue reminds you it is important to keep everyone a safe distance away when fireworks are ignited.

“These are explosives so when you are setting them off you should light them and remove yourself back from it, so keep many metres away to be safe,” notes Anderson.

The fire official adds you should set off fireworks on a hard surface and not to allow them to ignite in your hand. It is also important to allow fireworks to shoot straight up so there is no danger of them hitting a crowd, building or trees.

Anderson explains another important safety tip is to keep sober if you are in charge of the display by not consuming alcohol or cannabis.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
