Group Rallies Around Conservatory

“Angry, frustrated,” is how one member of the Friends of the Thunder Bay Conservatory feels after a program and service review suggested the city sell the botanical facility.

Spokesperson Marilyn Stinson said once news broke Thursday, reaction was quick and fast on social media.

“I had one comment on the Facebook group that said ‘if they close the conservatory they’ll be moving away from here within a couple of years,” Stinson said.

Stinson suggested selling off quality of life items like the conservatory would be bad for growing Thunder Bay’s tax base.

“The conservatory is such an amazing resource that is there for absolutely everybody regardless of race, religion, mental health,” Stinson added.

The group intends to write City Council to tell them how vital the facility is.

The independent program and service review conducted by Grant Thornton is coming before City Council Monday night. No decisions are expected to be made at that meeting.
