Health Centre Supporting Community

A local clinic has been able to give more support to those in need during the pandemic.

NorWest Community Health Centres says its Outreach Team started off delivering food boxes, but can now give their clients medication, hygiene products, medical care and more.

Coordinator of its Harm Reduction Program, Michelle Kolobutin, says it’s thanks to donations from the Thunder Bay COVID-19 Community Relief Fund.

“This is a community taking care of its community— the level of care and generosity circulating is significant, and this funding has been absolutely essential to the work our team is doing. The smiles, tears of appreciation and relief that people have when we are able to bring them much needed items is unforgettable,“ she says.

Clinic staff and Community Health Workers have also been phoning clients to check in on them and find out what they need.

“We have seen many single grandparents caring for several grandchildren. They have struggled with going to do tasks such as getting groceries and supplies, so we find ways to support them,” says Kolobutin.

The Outreach Team has also been reaching out to people who are homeless or don’t have secure housing.

“Places they would normally access are no longer available. Our team is interacting with individuals daily, trying to address urgent needs, handing out water, snacks, personal hygiene items and emergency supplies to stay healthy. We’re trying to support individuals to stay as safe and healthy as they can despite the circumstances they are experiencing,” says Juanita Lawson, CEO of NorWest Community Health Centres.
