Lac Des Illes To Resume Work Soon

The Lac des Illes mine is preparing to restart its operations.

A spokesperson for owner Impala Canada says they changed their care and maintenance crew yesterday and brought in teams to complete essential repairs.

Starting next Wednesday, the mine plans to conduct a partial shift change and bring in more crews for work like preparing for production and preparing ore stockpiles.

The final stage of the plan is scheduled for May 26, with a full shift change and bringing in a full operations team to re-start the mill.

The company emphasizes it has been working with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and will only progress to the next step if it is safe to do so.

The mine shuttered its operations April 13 after three workers were diagnosed with COVID-19. Impala Canada says all 25 cases associated with the mine are resolved. One mine worker is the region’s only death due to complications from COVID-19.
