Thunder Bay Businesses Hang By A Thread

It’s a tough waiting game endured by Thunder Bay business owners to receive financial help from the federal government to survive COVID-19.

Chamber of Commerce President Charla Robinson points out many are wondering when the money from the Canada Emergency wage subsidy program will show up.

“Will it actually be money, will it be a tax credit? How long will it take to get the money so they can actually have those dollars? A lot of businesses are concerned they don’t have the money in their banks accounts right now,” notes the chamber president. She adds as some companies look to bring workers back, there is concern the money won’t be there.

But, while they are all very stressed, some are attempting to keep a level head.

“But we also know that entrepreneurs tend to be optimistic in nature, they tend to be solutions oriented, and on the majority they’re looking for ways to weather this,” says Robinson. And, she points out many businesses are managing in ways they never thought they’d do. Many are switching their business models to make much needed medical supplies, or providing delivery services.

But, there’s also an appeal to everyone to keep supporting area business owners. The Chamber President points out many are resilient in giving their heart and soul to keep surviving, while waiting for emergency funding.

“So whatever you can do to support them, to help them to help their families and to help their employees have a long term future is very important at this time. And, as your radio station continues to say ‘We are all in this together'”, points out Robinson.
