The City of Thunder Bay is confirming they have had to temporarily reduce their workforce by one-third.
This includes temporary layoffs of up to 170 employees whose work doesn’t allow them to work from home.
It also includes a temporary shortage of work for about 620 part-time, casual and temporary employees who have not had work to do since facilities and programs were postponed.
City officials say areas impacted include recreation, child care, crossing guards, some clerical and outside services.
City Manager Norm Gale says it is an extension of the announcement made a couple of weeks ago and calls the decision “gut-wrenching.”
“We value the employees and the people that deliver these programs and services, just like members of the community. It’s important, these programs matter,” Gale adds.
