Teach Your Children Well

With the possibility of having the kids ‘home’ until September looming, I’ve been wracking my brain trying to think of things to teach them. Obviously we’ll spend some time reading together (we already do that regularly) and we’ll definitely be hitting up the Scholastic website to do some regular work as well. One of the big things I’ve been mulling over is giving them a better overview of music and why it has been so important in my life. I’m not a musician, and neither is their mother. I’ve never had the patience to learn an instrument despite trying many times to take lessons, and I suspect that particular gene has been passed along to them. We regularly listen to the important albums of my life, and the music they have discovered courtesy of classmates and the internet but I’ve been thinking about giving them something more in depth. Something that maybe I’m not overly qualified to teach but would definitely love to be able to do! Well, thankfully the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has come to my rescue! They’ve opened up their education resources for free online! There are pages of essays written by and for particular artists, video lessons, explanations of what instruments do and the effect of artists on the musical landscape today.

Literally hours of education and entertainment here for adults and kids alike, I know I’ll be working to created a mini-curriculum with my kids so we can start learning next week. I think we’ll start with my favourite topic: ‘Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em You Can’t Deny The Beatles Changed The Face of Popular Music Forever’.
