COVID-19 Concerns Cancel Students’ Trip

The Lakehead Public School Board has cancelled a trip to Europe for Westgate students.

Superintendent of Education Michelle Probizanski tells us they weighed their options in light of concerns over COVID-19.

“Northern Italy and Italy itself [are] classified as a level-3 health notice, so that no-one is travelling there at this point in time,” Probizanski explains.”We felt that with three of the countries of the four where they were travelling bordering on Italy, that it was probably a good idea at this point in time to not go.”

The cancelled March 10th trip included stops in France, Germany, Italy and Austria.

The Superintendent of Education understands that Westgate students are disappointed by the decision to cancel their trip but also that they know the situation involving COVID-19 is out of their hands.

“The general consensus is that this is out of any of our hands and the safety of our students and staff are the one thing we put at the forefront of any of our decisions,” Probizanski says.

Probizanski says there is one more trip upcoming for Westgate to Greece, which is set to leave on March 13th, and Superior Collegiate students are going to Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary on March 16th.

The School Board will decide on a case-by-case basis whether to cancel them. “We still have some time to look at the situation globally for the other two trips,” she notes.
