Mauro Accused Of Possible Ethics Breach

There may be another ethics breach at Thunder Bay City Council surrounding the Designated Truck Route.

While Council was talking about when they will vote on the truck route by-law, Mayor Bill Mauro said he is against the route and will vote against any by-law on it.

Councillor Trevor Giertuga says that could break their Code of Conduct rule about not working against the decisions of Council.

“I would like to get an interpretation and an opinion on whether this is in contravention of Rule 15 of our Code of Conduct,” Giertuga says.

Mauro claims he is allowed to make such comments and isn’t undermining their decision to go ahead with the truck route.

“I think there was a pretty clear opinion that came back on Rule 15, and that to vote against something or not support something in the Council chamber through your vote is not working against the rule of Council,” Mauro argues, referencing the report clearing Councillors Brian McKinnon and Albert Aiello of breaking Rule 15.

If Giertuga files his complaint, we can expect a report back from the Integrity Commissioner that may specify consequences for Mauro if he is found to have broken the rule. Council will have 90 days to respond to the Commissioner’s findings.

The City Clerk will come back to Council on or before April 29th with a proposed date to hear the revised truck route by-law.
