Pride Community Shares Safety Concerns

The 2SLGBTIQ+ community is sharing their thoughts with the Crime Prevention Council on community safety issues.

Thunder Pride Chair Jason Veltri tells us their recent rainbow and transgender crosswalk project brought to light negative comments on social media.

“There was hate there, there was a complete fallacy, fake news so to speak about the community. That’s safety and wellbeing of our community and those comments show why PRIDE is needed in Thunder Bay and why we do the work we do,” Veltri says.

Veltri goes on to say he recently learned its important for people to listen to each other about their concerns.

The Crime Prevention Council is working on creating a new provincially mandated Community Safety and Wellbeing plan.

The CPC already has a plan they created in 2017 however this plan will involve more aspects of the community.

Coordinator Lee-Ann Chevrette says Tuesday’s session is one of about 25 focus group sessions they are holding across the community.

Chevrette adds they are trying to hear from as many groups as possible in the community to ensure that the diverse views, perspectives, experiences, expertise and priorities of different populations can inform the new plan.
