I’ve never heard the original of the song, ‘For Real’ and as a big Tom Petty fan, I think that’s a shame. ‘For Real’ was recorded by Tom Petty in 2000 but was unreleased until it was used on a posthumous ‘Best Of’ last year. Obviously, I’ve been slacking if I missed that! Mind you, by the time I post this, I’ll have hit the internet and found it to listen to. I had no idea that this song existed, in either form but the version below, ‘For Real – For Tom’ is a gem! The cover is really a tribute, and a thank you in a way, to Petty. It features Willie Nelson along with his sons Micah and Lucas (and members of Lucas’ band The Promise of The Real), Jakob Dylan, Dhani Harrison and Amos Lee. It’s a stellar cast and a beautiful song. The song was recorded and released in December last year as a fundraiser for the Midnight Mission homeless shelter in Los Angeles which Tom Petty had donated to for many years. If you’re interested in purchasing the song, or even finding different ways to stream it on your own device, you can do it here.
To listen, check out the video below. I’ve included a little behind the scenes as well that’s a fun, quick watch. Enjoy!
