With the Trudeau government making the new NAFTA deal a top priority the deputy prime minister is urging quick passage.
Chrystia Freeland believes it is in the national interest to get the deal through parliament.
“I also very much appreciate the value to the Canadian economy in getting this deal finalized, ratified and putting the uncertainty behind us,” said the deputy prime minister.
The second reading debate on NAFTA 2.0 has started in the House of Commons.
Freeland insists the deal is not a take it or leave it proposition for the opposition and will get the scrutiny it deserves adding, “I am far from thinking that the debate we are hearing in the House now, (and) the discussions we will be hearing in committee are pointless.”
On Wednesday, United States President Donald Trump signed the deal, making Canada the only country in the three-country pact not to formally ratify it.
