Then and Now: Harem Scarem

Quite often we forget that the artists we loved ‘back then’ are still making music today. Sure, some if it misses the mark: the band is trying to adapt with the times, or hasn’t adapted enough and sounds stale, or silly now; However a lot of it is really good but doesn’t get any further than the core fans who still follow the band on social media. A new track from Canadian band Harem Scarem came across my social media today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was never a HUGE Harem Scarem fan initially, but when Harry Hess released his first solo album back in the early 2000’s, I became a fan and revisited the older albums. If you like hard rocking power-pop songs with great harmony and solid hooks (think Cheap Trick, Firehouse, The Who), look no further! The new track ‘The Death of Me’ certainly has a familiar feel to it, without feeling stale or dated, I’m looking forward to hearing more from their new album ‘Change The World’ which comes out in March. I’ve posted a couple of ‘Then and Now’ music videos for you to check out both the latest from Harem Scarem as well as one of my favourites from ‘back in the day’ below.

Then: Easily my favourite track from early Harem Scarem, showing the power and melody in the band’s songwriting and performance right off the bat.

Now: A brand new track just released last week!

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
